TACLOBAN - Just a few days after pop legend Michael Jackson died following a cardiac arrest, fans in Tacloban City have started buying DVD copies of his songs and concerts off the shelves.
DVD vendors marked a sudden increase in demand for Michael Jackson video materials being sold in rows and rows of DVD shops in the city.
"A lot of MJ's fans really come and buy a copy of their idol's songs," said Michael Cabiltes, one of the many DVD kiosk owners in Tacloban's downtown district.
Cabiltes, reportedly named after the "King of Pop", shared that he felt sad over the 50-year-old singer's early demise. "I really like him because he is a good singer and dancer," he said.
Jackson collapsed at his rented mansion in the exclusive Los Angeles neighborhood of Holmby Hills and was rushed to the hospital by paramedics before being pronounced dead at 2:26 p.m. (2126 GMT) on Thursday (Friday in Manila).
Jackson, had been preparing for a 50-show concert comeback in London dubbed "the final curtain." The tickets were sold out a few days after these were made available. His career, though immensely successful, was underscored by controversy, from bizarre public behavior, his startling physical transofrmation, and multiple allegations of child molestation and abuse.
The singer was one of the most influential figures in the music industry, producing the highest-selling album of all time, "Thriller." He also ruled the charts and dazzled audiences with electric dance moves like the reverse "moonwalk" in the 1980s, and received tremendous success for his first solo album "Off The Wall", which sold 10 million copies.
Born on August 29, 1958, Jackson made his show business debut with four of his elder brothers in the "Jackson Five" pop group, and went on to lead the stage clan with a piping soprano and dazzling dance moves. With a report from Agence France-Presse.
