Guns, truncheons and Blackberry phones.

Metro Manila policemen will now experience high-tech crime fighting as the police leadership in the capital region has started acquiring Blackberry mobile phones, powered with one of the top phone operators in the country.

Regional police chief Roberto Rosales on Thursday announced that his command will be acquiring 105 Blackberry mobile phones that will be distributed to different police stations in 16 cities in the metropolis.

The Metro Manila police office already has 45 mobile phones, which were distributed Thursday and 30 more already being used by the Manila Police District, Rosales's previous command before he was appointed to the regional command.

Rosales said the Blackberry phones powered by the Philippine Long Distance Company/Smart Telecommunications will provide policemen a "real-time" verification of vehicle registration for anti-car theft operations and on-line criminal record verification for street crime fighting.

The police regional command and the telecommunications company on Thursday signed a memorandum of agreement. The system that will be provided by the company will serve as a jumping board for the Metro Manila police to implement the use of Blackberry mobile phones as one of the technology tools to fight criminality.

Rosales said the acquisition of the mobile phones is part of the police's modernization program.
