Jeffrey “The Bull” de Luna remained in contention for the 2009 (JUS) World 9-Ball China Pudong Tang Cheng Open title after posting three consecutive wins.

De Luna beat Mateusz Sniegocki of Poland, 11-7, and then defeated He Wen Li of China, 11-4. Both matches were played on Friday. He won over Sniegocki again, 11-5, on Saturday.

With his victories, de Luna progressed to the round-of-16.

De Luna is the only Filipino remaining in the competition after three Pinoy pool players bowed out of the event which is held at the Pudong Yuanshen Gymnasium in Shanghai, China.

Antonio “Ga-Ga” Gabica won over Chinese Chen Cong, 11-3. But he lost to Che Wei-Fu of Chinese-Taipei, 11-6, and Yukio Akakariyama of Japan, 9-11, from an 6-all deadlock.

Demosthenes “Plong-Plong” Pulpul also lost to Jinhu Dang of China, 11-6, and current two-time WPA World Junior Champion Ko Pin-Yi of Chinese Taipei, 11-7.

Lastly, Marlon “Marvelous” Manalo was defeated by Chinese Taipei’s Yang Ching-Shun, 11-6. He bounced back by stunning Louis Condo of Australia, 11-5, but yielded to Kuo Bin-Won of Chinese-Taipei, 11-10, for the last 32 seat.

The event’s format states that the cue artists will play a double round robin for the race-to-eleven in the last 64 (Stage 2), while single knock-out affair will be employed in the last 32.

The World 9-Ball China Pudong Tang Cheng Open champion will bring home $40,000 while the runner-up will receive $20,000. The defeated semifinalists are set to get $5,500 each. – Marlon Bernardino
